Here’s a selection of services, apps, websites and tools you might find helpful on your motorcycle travels. From mobile data to banking, flights to accommodation, group chats to bike shipping, here’s a shortcut to the stuff that works.
Planning
Mad or Nomad
Our website is a free resource built to help you travel the world on a motorcycle. Search through our Destination guides for specific info on countries and our main guides for motorcycle travel info. We also offer a personalised consulting service for in-depth help and trip planning.
iOverlander
iOverlander is an essential map app for adventure riders and overlanders. It's a community user-generated database listing everything you need including campsites, border crossings, mechanics, accommodation, warnings, storage and much more. It's well worth downloading.
There's a huge range of Facebook groups for overlanders. Start with the Horizons Unlimited group as a base for questions. For specific countries search for 'overlanding' followed by the continent, region or country name.
There are dedicated WhatsApp groups for overland travellers for most countries and regions. The groups have privately shared invite links. Use this link to find the majority. Join Overlanding groups on Facebook and ask for the links to the WhatsApp groups.
Internet
eSIM
We recommend using eSIMs on your travels. They make life so much easier on the road. We use Holafly which has unlimited data and can use one eSIM to cover an entire region or continent so we always have access.
VPN
NordVPN is a reliable option we've been using for years. It encrypts your connection over public Wi-Fi, supports fast uploads, and works across multiple devices—perfect from hostels to roadside cafés. It keeps our connection and work private and secure.

Accommodation
Booking.com
Booking.com the go-to platform for booking accommodation while travelling. It offers flexible bookings, wide accommodation options, and user reviews that help you find safe, rider-friendly places with bike parking.
AirBnB
Airbnb is surprisingly good the world over. You'll find some little gems on here, especially if you need to stay somewhere for longer and want a more private getaway, rest stop or just want an entire place.
Banks
Wise
Wise offers real exchange rates, low fees, and easy transfers—perfect for travellers managing cross-border costs and accessing funds abroad. We use it for international payments.
Revolut
Revolut gives travellers multi-currency accounts, real exchange rates, and spending analytics—handy for budgeting on the road and avoiding surprise foreign transaction fees.
Monzo
Monzo is great for travellers thanks to fee-free spending abroad, real-time budget tracking, and instant notifications. We use Monzo as our primary banking card while travelling.

Transport
Skyscanner
Skyscanner helps travellers compare flights across multiple providers and is often cheaper than booking directly. Click the entire month option when searching flights to find the cheapest deal.
Shipping Finder
If you're planning on shipping your motorcycle abroad, use our Shipping Companies Finder. Click the country you want to ship to and from and contact the companies on there directly for info.
On the road
Vaccinations
Fit for Travel is an NHS site offering country-specific vaccination advice, malaria risk maps, and health tips. It'll help you plan your health needs and keep you safe and well-informed.
Safety
We recommend using the UK Gov website to research safety advice on each country you're travelling to. It often gives an excellent breakdown on areas to avoid with maps.
Windy
The Windy mobile app is our go-to weather app. You can configure the settings to show wind, rain, waves, heat etc and it gives real time worldwide weather maps. It's excellent.
Viator
We often use Viator to help find cheap and easy deals on off-the-bike tours and experiences. For example, a walking tour around Hiroshima in Japan. It's a great and easy way to find fun things to do.
Rebtel
We used to use Skype to make all our international calls. But in 2025 Skype has been shut down. We've since moved to Rebtel. It's a web based app for making calls anywhere in the world.
Navigation
Maps.Me
Maps.Me is a free offline map app you can use to navigate around the world. There's a paid version also, but the free version works perfectly. We've used it to ride round the world.
Calimoto
Calimoto is a route planning app with a free and paid version. The main benefits of this app are curvy road planning, offline maps, ride tracking and community shared routes.
OsmAnd
OsmAnd is an open-source navigation app that uses OpenStreetMap data to provide detailed offline maps and customizable routing. It supports GPX track recording.

Insurance
Big Cat
Big Cat Travel Insurance is the UK based insurance company we use for travel insurance. It covers us to ride our motorcycles round the world. Check out our insurance guide for more info.
IMG
IMG insurance offers global travel medical coverage with flexible plans for adventure travelers and overlanders. This is an American company but often still offers policies to other nationalities.
Baja Bound
Baja Bound offers motorcycle insurance for riders heading into Mexico. Insurance for Mexico shouldn't be taken lightly as it's compulsory. Check our dedicated travel guides for Mexico for more info.

Wiki Camps is a must have app for overlanders looking to camp in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA and the UK. It's a paid for app, but well worth it.
