The 5 Best Motorcycle Routes in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is an incredible region to travel through and out of this world when it comes to motorcycle travel.

We first rode in SEA over 17 years ago spending months renting scooters and motorbikes and pottering around islands and the mainland. Fast forward to our round the world trip and we ended up staying for over a year exploring Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and the island of Borneo on our motorcycles.

There are thousands of amazing roads and routes throughout these countries making it tricky to know where to ride – especially if you have limited time.

So, to help you plan your motorcycle trip in Southeast Asia, we listed our five absolute favourite routes.

Thailand: The Mae Hong Son Loop

Thailand Myanmar border

Thailand is a phenomenal place to ride a motorcycle. It has both insane off-road riding and incredible tarmacked roads. But there’s one route that sits high above the rest – literally: The Mae Hong Son Loop. Not only is this mountainous paradise one of the best riding roads in Thailand, the Mae Hong Son Loop is one of the best motorcycle rides in the world.

The road carves its way through overhanging forests and lures you in with superbly crafted corners. You’ll only remember where you are when it allows you to pop out for a gasp of air and a quick mountain vista before you to take a deep breath and burrow back in for more.

This loop is an absolute must for not just Thailand, but the whole of Southeast Asia.

We have a dedicated guide explaining everything you need to know about the Mae Hong Son Loop. Check it out if you fancy riding there.

Vietnam: The Ha Giang Loop

Motorcycle travel Vietnam Ha Giang Loop

The Ha Giang Loop in the extreme north of Vietnam is renowned for being one of the best motorcycle rides in Southeast Asia. And it’s also one of the best ways to experience the northern region because of the types of roads you’ll be travelling along. They’re narrow, winding, often undulated and that makes it thrilling and exciting.

It’s incredibly beautiful with stunning mountain landscapes and roads that climb through the clouds before plunging into valleys. Around every corner you’ll want to stop to photograph the region’s raw nature, its wonderfully friendly people and the insane road you just tackled to get there.

There’s a lot to know about riding the Ha Giang Loop, so we recommend reading through our packed guide first.

Laos: Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang

Motorcycle Adventure Travel Laos

The best road ride in Laos is from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang. And it’s not just the ride there, but the two destinations are well worth exploring on two wheels as well. Deep green karst burst out of the ground and line the horizon, behind them a blanket of blue and grey mist. The road goes through little towns and villages, wraps its way round lime green rice fields and up and over mountains and beautiful scenery.

If you Google motorcycling in Laos, the Thakek Loop will always come up. It’s regarded as one of Laos’ best biking roads. But that’s because it’s now a relatively easy loop for tourists to rent a scooter from Thakek and ride it. It’s a good ride, but there are much better routes and the Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang ride is far better. The reason that’s not talked about as much is because most tourists won’t rent a bike to ride from one city to another.

Indonesia: Mount Bromo

Motorcycle Travel Indonesia Guide

No motorcycle trip to Indonesia is complete without a visit to the legendary Mount Bromo in East Java. One of Indonesia’s 130 activate volcanoes, Mount Bromo lies in the Tengger Massif region and is part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

But to get to it and peer inside, you’ve first got to cross the ‘Sea of Sand’ that surrounds the volcano like a black moat. This is a tough ride and you need to be experienced to ride in and out because you’ll mainly be on deep powdery sand.

For info on how to ride there, have a read of our guide below.

Cambodia: Temple hunting

Cambodia adventure motorcycle travel

Cambodia is a phenomenal country to travel through on a motorcycle – mainly because you won’t see or find many other motorcycle travellers. For an adventure biker, it feels unexplored and you can  find yourself riding lonely trails in the middle of the forest searching out hidden, abandoned and overgrown temples.

There’s not one specific route we’re recommending for Cambodia, so instead, we’d suggest heading to Siam Reap, visiting Angkor Wat and then exploring that region in search of temples. Our guides and blogs for Cambodia will steer you in the right direction.
