Our Round the World Motorcycle Trip FAQ

Here’s a bunch of the most frequently asked questions we get about our RTW trip.

We left on January 1st 2018. Unfortunately, we left during the middle of Storm Eleanor, which in hindsight was ridiculous, but we had been putting our trip off so much that we were determined to go. Our first blog post sums up how bad that decision turned out to be…

We set off with no timeframe and no return date. At the time of writing this FAQ, we’re in 2021 and had been on the road nearly three years riding from the UK to Japan and then onwards through Southeast Asia. Covid had hit and put our plans on hold. So, based on that, perhaps another four, five or ten years before we get the whole way round the world – which is still our plan.

Check out the About page and take a look at our route for more info.

Alissa had travelled on motorcycles with my quite often and abroad and has had a bike licence since she was 18 years old.

I’ve been travelling abroad since I was 18 on motorcycles and apart from riding around Europe, I rode from the UK to Albania at 19 and from the UK to Iraq at 23. We had both also done a few big biking trips in Canada and Southeast Asia.

Shortly after I joined Motor Cycle News as a feature writer and spent five years riding all over the world and writing about it. Alissa would join me on these rides all the time.

So, yes, we had a lot of experience, but that certainly isn’t a prerequisite for going on a round the world trip. Check out our Stories page, there are some epic tales on there from fellow riders who had little to no bike travel experience and just left to ride RTW and are now extremely well-seasoned travellers.

We wrote a dedicated guide just to answer this question because we get asked it so often.

Our How to go on a motorcycle adventure guide is an introduction to bike travel. It explains what you need to know, how to prep and what to expect. Once you’ve had a read of that, then you’ll find loads more detailed guides for specific areas of bike travel such as our Gear Guides and Destination Guides as well as the comprehensive Travel Tips page.

We hope our site will act as a detailed resource to help you prepare for and go on a motorcycle adventure or even round the world. That’s why we built it!

But of course, if you can’t find what you’re looking for here, don’t worry. Just visit our Contact page and send us an email or message, or post away in our Forum. We’re always happy to help fellow motorcycle travellers.
