Foreign registered motorcycles in Argentina
When entering Argentina as a tourist riding a foreign registered motorcycle, a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TVIP) is issued to you at the border. TVIPs are issued at no cost. Automatically, you will be issued a TVIP allowing your motorcycle to remain in Argentina for three months.
If requested, some borders will issue TVIPs for eight months. Do you plan to have your foreign registered motorcycle in Argentina beyond the three month TVIP limit? Be sure to request an eight month TVIP at the border when entering.
It is mandatory to exit your foreign registered motorcycle from Argentina before your three month or eight month TVIP expires. If your foreign registered motorcycle remains in Argentina without a valid TVIP, it might be confiscated and you will pay an expensive fine to get it back. Motorcycle liability insurance is compulsory in Argentina.
If you are riding in, you will have probably purchased a Mercosur insurance policy that covers you in any Mercosur country. If not, motorcycle insurance is available at the border or in a town close to the border. Do not ride Argentina without it.
Foreign registered motorcycles cannot be legally sold or purchased in Argentina. If an illegal transfer of title occurs in Argentina, all insurance is deemed null and void and this releases the insurance company from any liability. Buying or selling a foreign registered motorcycle in Argentina is a criminal offense.
Long term foreign registered motorcycle parking in Argentina
Leaving your foreign registered motorcycle in Argentina for more than the eight months allowed by an eight month TVIP without exiting the motorcycle from Argentina and then entering again with a new TVIP, is possible but complicated.
A valid TVIP may be “interdicted” by customs officials – if a responsible (local) person is willing to accept responsibility for the motorcycle and guarantee the motorcycle will not be moved during the period of interdiction.
Federal inspectors will visit and identify the motorcycle in situ, meet the person who will be responsible for the motorcycle, and secure a notarized signature indicating transfer of responsibility for the motorcycle. This process takes about two weeks.
The motorcycle cannot be moved during the period of interdiction and a new TVIP will be issued after Federal inspectors reinspect the motorcycle and release the responsible person from responsibility.
The process to release interdiction also takes about two weeks. Once released from interdiction, a few days are allowed to exit the motorcycle from Argentina. Argentina interdicted many TVIPs during COVID, and this process is generally reserved for emergency situations.
The interdiction process is complicated and not recommended. There have been several cases of customs “aduana” misplacing paperwork and other difficulties that have caused substantial to very long delays in releasing the interdiction. Interdiction should be considered as a last resort.
Parking your foreign registered motorcycle in Argentina
As a tourist, you can legally park your foreign registered motorcycle in Argentina as long as the TVIP for your motorcycle is valid. You can leave Argentina, but you must return to renew the TVIP before it expires.
The easiest way to renew a TVIP is exit your motorcycle from Argentina and enter again with a new three month or eight month TVIP. This is as simple as sailing on the BoqueBus ferry from Buenos Aires to Uruguay and returning.

Many tourists buy an Argentine registered motorcycle, tour Argentina, and then sell the motorcycle back to the dealer and walk with the majority of the purchase price in their pocket, with the option of parking their Argentine registered motorcycle in Argentina forever with no need for a TVIP.
