Mosko Moto Ectotherm Heated Jacket Review

This review is based on our own personal experiences using the Mosko Moto Heated Jacket on our round the world motorcycle trip.

We love heated motorcycle jackets. They’re wonderfully warm hugs on cold days. But when it comes to travelling on a motorcycle – they’re also invaluable. A heated jacket saves space, weight and hassle and here’s why.

The best way to deal with cold temperatures is to use a layering system: base layer, mid-layer, outer, wind breaker. And in seriously cold conditions that’s what we do. But, it is a faff. You’ll sweat up the second you’re stopped or off the bike and have to take off loads of kit to regulate your temperature.

With a heated jacket, you don’t need that layering system and can quickly and easily regulate your temperature with the push of a button.

Additionally, you don’t have that restricted feeling of loads of garments under your riding jacket – and you save valuable packing space by only needing the one top.

That’s why they’re so good, and the Mosko Moto Ectotherm is one of the very best. This review discusses why.

Features

The Ectotherm is a puffer jacket that doubles up as a heated motorcycle jacket. It has six panels lined with 42w carbon fibre heating elements. You’ll find them in the collar, arms, left and right chest and the back.

It comes with a controller and three heat levels. The controller can be tucked away and is easily accessible. You get two zipped hand pockets and one on the chest (the left pocket converts to a stuff sack), elastic cuffs, thumb loops and a great fit.

It’s powered by your motorcycle’s 12v battery. You get a cable that connects to your battery, which you can then run to a comfortable position on your motorcycle (ours pokes out from under the seat). You then just plug the wire from your jacket and will warm up immediately.

Version 2 updates

The latest Ectotherm jacket gets a redesigned controller and pocket for the cables. And it also has two new battery-saving modes so it can be used for longer when off the bike with an external power bank.

What we like

The Mosko Moto Ectotherm is a high-quality, exceptionally well-made bit of kit – as with all Mosko’s gear. You’re getting the best. And the reason we love this heated jacket so much is because of its design. Let’s explain…

Dual purpose

As we live on the road, we need a lot of kit and that means the space in our bags is precious. So, everything has to be dual purpose to save both space and weight. That’s why we use a heated jacket, so we don’t have to carry multiple layers and aren’t big and bulky when riding, instead we can wear a t-shirt and then the Ectotherm and that’s enough and we’re not constricted under our riding suit.

But the big plus with the Ectotherm is that it’s actually a puffer jacket. That means that even when we’re off the bike and walking around town, it’s still warm. It looks smart too and so it doubles up as our evening jacket. Invaluable.

Other heated jackets we’ve tested over the years like the Keis and Gerbing aren’t suitable when off the bike and that’s where the Mosko takes a big win.

Does the job

Aside from being dual purpose, it also does its main job of keeping me warm exceptionally well. The controller is easy to use and jumps to the red (hottest) setting as soon as it’s plugged in. I can easily cycle through the three heat settings with a quick thumb of the fat button and am instantly heated up on cold rides.

It’s all day comfy both on and off the bike, smart, warm, durable and compressible. We can easily pack it away (it weighs about 0.7kg) and keep it at the bottom of our panniers in hot climates, it takes up minimal space – and that’s all we need for when the weather turns. Perfect.
