Mosko Moto Backcountry Panniers Review

This review is based on our own personal experiences using the Mosko Moto Backcountry 35L panniers on our round the world motorcycle trip.

For years I’ve never liked tank bags. They’re big, bulky, get in the way, I hate trying to shift it when filling up with petrol and I don’t like it there when I’m standing on the pegs. So I just do without.

At the time of writing in January 2025, we’ve been on our round the world motorcycle ride for seven years – and I’ve not wanted a tank bag in that entire time. So, what’s made me change my mind?

Our DSLR lives in Alissa’s top box. Every time we want to take a picture, we’ll pull over, unlock the box, get the camera out, take the pic and put it away. If there’s going to be a lot as we’re on a really cool track, I’ll sling it round my neck and ride.

Over the years, this setup has gotten tiring – really tiring. So, we decided to try a tank bag and see how I get on with it.

Mosko Moto Gnome features

This is one of the best, well-constructed, well-made and well-thought-out motorcycle tank bags on the market.

Design

The Gnome goes across your tank in a landscape position, that stops it from creeping forward towards you as the rider – making it easier to stand without touching the bag.

The Gnome has 5L of storage, including a 1.5L hydration bladder tucked inside. This is handy, especially for off-roading and long days in the saddle where wearing a water bladder pack in your backpack can be achy on your back.

It comes with a rain cover and a MOLLE attachment panel on top so you can add a map pocket or a phone pocket.

The tank bag can be used as a waist bag with quick and easy to use straps.

There are loads of pockets including a fleece lined pocket, internal pockets, a hidden passport pocket and another outer easy access stash pocket.

Attachment

The Gnome is attached to your motorcycle using a harness system. The front harness loops under and around your motorcycle’s steering head column. There’s an additional strap which keeps that in place.

The lower harness gets attached to your frame or wherever you want to pin it to. It comes with zip ties to make this easy. And that’s it. The tank bag unclips easily and can be undone in two seconds for filling with petrol by releasing the top two clips.

What’s good about the Mosko Moto Gnome?

The Gnome tank bag is small, lightweight and doesn’t get in the way. I can fit my Sony A7iii DSLR camera in the main compartment and whip it out to take photos without having to get off the bike. That’s a huge bonus for us as we travel.

The bladder pack is a really nice touch. It’s hidden in a lower compartment, so it doesn’t affect the main compartment of the bag. I love being able to sip it while riding or when stopped without having to rely on a backpack.

It’s seriously tough and high quality. As with all Mosko Moto products, they’re built to last – forever.

The Gnome makes my life easier on the bike. Before I used to use a handlebar bag, but have since removed it for the added space and convenience of this bag. I can unclip it in seconds, remove it easily and it doesn’t get in my way when I ride thanks to its shape.
