ITEHIL Mosquito Repellent Lamp

This review is based on our own personal experiences using the ITEHIL lamp on our round the world motorcycle trip.

What is it and how does it work?

This lamp uses the familiar blue repellent mats, infused with synthetic pyrethroids (allethrin/prallethrin). Pop a tab in, switch it on, and within a minute the heating plate vaporizes the active ingredient into the air. This creates a protective zone where mosquitoes noticeably avoid the area. It also doubles as a bright torch, though the lighting function is separate from the repellent.

First impressions

Compact, waterproof (IPX6), and rechargeable via USB‑C, the ITEHIL lamp works as both a lantern (450 lumens) and a torch (300 lumens). At just 165g, it’s light enough to throw in panniers or hang inside a tent. The hook and telescopic base make it versatile for camp setups.

Features and specs

Battery life: Up to 65 hours depending on mode, with a 5000mAh cell that can even charge your phone.
Lighting: Bright enough for camp cooking or tent use, with multiple brightness settings.
Repellent modes: Strong (5 hours), Soft (8 hours), and Sleeping (16 hours).

Our experience

We’ve used it nightly while camping in Africa, where mosquitoes are relentless. The lamp heats quickly (to 165C) and activates the repellent mats in under a minute. We put a blue tab in, switch it on and let it get to work.

We’ve found it doesn’t kill mosquitoes, but it does do a good job at keeping them away.

We also use it on our room and when outside working on the bike. It’s pretty handy as it comes with removable tripod legs so it can be propped up on the ground and a hook so we can hang it in the tent.

The torch lamp is excellent and exceptionally bright, so that comes in very handy as we camp so much too.

It’s robust, well made, can be reduced in size when the legs are unscrewed and is a great bit of kit for motorcycle riders travelling in areas with mosquitoes.

Pros and cons

Pros

It’s well built, tough, light and waterproof.
Multi‑function: lantern, torch, power bank, mosquito repellent.
Portable and easy to hang or stand and quick to remove legs to make compact.
Safer than burning coils, no smoke.

Cons

This is a pricey device at £50, but if you’re constantly camping in mosquito areas, it’s a life saver and a lot cheaper than getting malaria.
You do need to replace the tabs when they’ve burnt out. But the tabs are lighter than feathers and we carry a huge stack at the bottom of our pannier, which takes up no space or weight, so we don’t mind this factor at all.
The effectiveness is limited to a small radius close to the lamp.
Works best in still air; wind reduces coverage (though wind often keeps mosquitoes away anyway).

Verdict

For motorcycle travellers, the ITEHIL Mosquito Repellent Lamp is a clever, multi‑purpose bit of kit. It’s not a silver bullet — the blue mats repel rather than kill, and coverage is localized — but as part of a layered defence it’s genuinely useful. The fact it doubles as a lantern and power bank makes it more versatile than single‑purpose repellents.

For us, it’s been effective enough to make mosquito‑filled evenings bearable, though we still combine it with nets and clothing in high‑risk zones in Africa. Overall, it’s robust, handy, and earns its place in our panniers.
