How to Rent a Motorcycle in Ecuador

Motorcycle Rental Guide for Ecuador

Ecuador is a little country in the northwest of South America – right on the equatorial belt. It may be small, but it packs a serious punch and is absolutely incredible for motorcycle travellers. It’s easy to get around, packed with so much riding variation and fun – this makes it perfect for renting and touring on two-wheels. And this guide shows you exactly how to do that.

Why rent a motorcycle in Ecuador?

Location

Ecuador has it all from the epic Andes mountains to the Amazon rainforest and the Pacific coast. And connecting the three regions are insanely good trails, tracks and roads. You can ride throughout the day and feel like your crossing countries and continents.

Getting there

It’s also easy to get to and enter Ecuador as a foreigner – usually with 90 days visa free. Check this page to see what the rules are for your country.

Renting

And to make it even easier, there is an excellent top-tier rental and tour company located in the capital, Quito, that takes care of everything. This makes a huge difference when flying in to rent a bike as you know you’ll be getting a quality service and not tatty old machines.

Our recommended rental company in Ecuador

We highly recommend Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental. We have been riding our motorcycles around the world since 1^st January 2018 and in late 2024 we entered Ecuador.

Two friends from Canada have always wanted to ride in Ecuador, and so they flew to Quito and rented two bikes from Freedom Bike and the entire process was impeccable. We personally visited the shop and chatted with the owners, checked out their bikes and equipment and it’s one of the best setups we’ve ever seen.

Documents required to rent a bike in Ecuador

To rent a motorcycle in Ecuador you are going to need the following:

Passport
A valid motorcycle licence
International Driver’s Permit (technically you do need a 1949 convention IDP to ride)
Personal travel insurance – you don’t need this to ride, but we highly recommend you have your own solid travel insurance that covers you to ride a rental motorcycle in Ecuador. Costs

Rental rates will vary hugely depending on the type of motorcycle and duration. And tours will depend on whether they’re self-guided, guided, number of riders, times etc. But for a ball-park figure it’s between $85 and $200 per day, with the price dropping dependent on duration. It’s best to check Freedom’s website for exact pricings.

Whenever and wherever you rent a motorcycle, it’s always important to check the insurance options and make sure you’re happy with what’s covered. You may want to include liability insurance, a collision damage waiver, excess cover and theft protection.

Checking your motorcycle

Whether you’re renting a motorcycle for an off-road ride through the mountains or a rental car for a week at home, always take photos of the vehicle and a little video walk-around before riding/driving off. That way, any damage and scratches are recorded and can’t be disputed later.

Inspect your bike, check all the obvious things like brakes, chain slack, tyres etc. Take it for a short test ride and make sure you’re happy before you venture off. Make sure you ask about maintenance and what is and isn’t covered. For example, do they want you to lube the chain and do they provide a can of lubricant?

Do you get tools for repairing flats, what’s the process if that happens or if there are any breakdowns etc. Ask any and as many questions as you need to so that you’re comfortable and fully understand what you are responsible for.

Should I rent or join a tour?

This one is down to personal preference. Renting a motorcycle is a great way to experience freedom. You can go where you want and when you want. It can just be you, alone doing your thing – which is perfect for some people. And it’s also the cheaper option.

Or a guided tour takes care of everything so you don’t have to worry or deal with any of the ‘travel’ side of things. You just turn up and everything’s taken care of so all you have to do is just enjoy the ride. This is also a great option if you enjoy riding with others. Or there’s self-guided, a mix of both worlds.
