We love riding horses, but the last time we rode was six years ago in Kyrgyzstan, and it did not go well (long story). So, once we reached Filandia we headed straight for Steel Horse Colombia. We had read about them years ago, received loads of recommendations from friends and fellow travellers and always planned on visiting.

And we’re so glad we did. Alissa and I went out with two guides and the four of us spent the entire day chasing trails over mountains and through rivers and it was one of the highlights of our trip through South America.

What is Steel Horse Colombia?

Steel Horse Colombia is a ranch nestled on the outskirts of Filandia – a beautiful town in Colombia. Steel Horse run horse riding tours for beginners to advanced riders and provide accommodation and other services such as yoga and serenity retreats.

Where is it?

Filandia is a pretty town located in the centre of Colombia at around 1900m. The ranch is in Colombia’s coffee district, which means it has a spring-like climate all year round. What makes it so good for riding is that it’s surrounded by valleys, coffee farms, pastures, forests, jungles and rivers.

It’s easy to access with your own motorcycle or vehicle. Or if you’re coming in via plane or public transport, then it’s between Bogota, Medellin and Cali (there are two major airports within a 30-50 minute drive).

Are the horses well looked after?

Yes. From our experience personally checking the place out and staying three days the horses are very well looked after. We had also done a lot of research beforehand and spoken to a number of other travellers who recommended the company. We’re confident the horses are in very safe and loving hands.

What tours and rides can I do?

Steel Horse Colombia offer a number of different riding tours. You can opt for exhilarating and adventurous rides or gentle strolls. There’s one-hour rides or even 10-day adventures. It’s totally up to you. It’s best to get in touch with them and discuss what you want as they can easily tailor a trip to your likings. You’ll find more options on their site.

What about accommodation?

Steel Horse Colombia has a 6-acre horse farm, where the horses are kept. At the farm there are 18 rooms and a range of accommodation options from private rooms to dorms to renting the entire fam. We recommend staying there if you’re doing a horse riding tour.

What riding skill level do I need?

The rides are well suited for any riding level from beginners to experienced riders. The team will match you to the right horse. Personally, we have ridden a few times, but wanted an adventurous ride and they matched that perfectly. Some of the downhills through slushy mud were hairy but so much fun and the entire experience was incredible. And galloping through pastures when you get the rhythm and are in sync with your horse… there’s no better feeling.

What do I need to take?

Comfortable clothing: Long trousers are a must and a long sleeve shirt is always a good idea.
Decent footwear: Trainers with good grip is recommended.
Sun protection: Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Water bottle: Take a bottle of water with you.
Snacks: It’s always worth carrying extra snacks, and you can also take some snacks for your horse like carrots.
Camera: You can take a camera or your smart phone to capture the ride.
